Backgammon
Backgammon is one of the oldest two-player board games: a race around 24 points, driven by the roll of two dice. On KachaPlay (kachaplay.com) you play it free in your browser, against the computer, a random opponent, or a friend. This page covers the rules we use, the ways to play, and a few pointers.
The rules we use
- Each side has 15 checkers set out in the standard opening position.
- On your turn you roll two dice and move checkers by that many pips toward your home. Doubles let you play the number four times.
- A single checker on a point is a blot. Land on an opponent's blot and you hit it — it goes to the bar and must re-enter on the far side before that player can move anything else.
- Once all 15 of your checkers are in your home board, you start bearing off — removing them by exact or higher rolls.
- The first player to bear off all 15 checkers wins. There are no draws.
The dice are drawn by the server, not the browser, so neither side can influence a roll. Two trims keep the game clean and fast: the doubling cube and gammon/backgammon point multipliers are not used here — rating is based purely on who wins.
Ways to play on KachaPlay
Against the computer
Three difficulty levels — Rookie, Sensei and Master. Computer games are for practice: no rating change, no coins or gems.
Online against a random opponent
Get matched with another player. These games are rated — backgammon keeps its own Elo rating, and online games are where coins and gems come from.
Against a friend
Create a room and share the link, or invite a friend. Friend rooms are casual (no rating). Each online game can be no time limit, 5 minutes or 10 minutes per side. See How to Play for the full rating and currency rules.
A few tips
- Cover your blots — a lone checker can be hit and sent all the way back to the bar.
- Making points in front of your opponent's checkers slows their escape.
- When you are ahead in the race, run; when behind, hold back and wait for a hit.
- Try to keep your home board strong so a checker you hit is hard to re-enter.
FAQ
Is there a doubling cube?
No — the doubling cube is out of scope here, so games are a straight race to bear off.
Are the dice fair?
Yes. The server draws every roll with an authoritative random source; the browser cannot tamper with it.
Can a backgammon game end in a draw?
No. Someone always bears off all fifteen checkers first.
